34. Portuguese Conditional (Futuro do Pretérito)
The futuro do pretérito is the conditional mood which expresses a possibility in the future, and it is translated as would + infinitive in English. (However, if would in English can be replaced by used to, that is actually the imperfect tense since it expresses a past, rather than a future, action.)
All verbs add these endings to the infinitive to form the Portuguese conditional:
all verbs | |
-ia | -íamos |
-ias | -íeis |
-ia | -iam |
Just like in the future, fazer changes to far before adding these endings.
Eu a amaria. I would love her.
Vocês comeriam o tomate? Would you eat the tomato?
Nós partiríamos mais cedo. We would leave earlier.
