French Tutorials Index: French Phrases, Vocabulary, Grammar, and Pronunciation

French is my second language, so it is the most extensive language tutorial on this site. You can work through the tutorials lesson by lesson or you can jump to any lesson you'd like by using the index below. French VII is more designed for those who are moving to or living in France so the vocabulary is culture-specific, while the Informal & Slang tutorial intends to teach the real spoken form of the language instead of the grammatically correct and formal language always found in textbooks. French Phonetics is designed as a very basic pronunciation tutorial with exercises and audio. Audio Flashcards & Exercises are also available for French I and French slang. French Realia contains many scanned items such as brochures, receipts, tickets, etc. that I have collected so that teachers and learners of French can see the real language as it is used in France.

Katia & Kylie Mac Learn French

If you're interested in buying books to supplement your French studies, book recommendations are below. And Ectaco sells many electronic handheld dictionaries and translators.

Rocket French

Rocket French. Learn French In Just 8 Weeks is a course for beginners that includes 31 interactive audio lessons, 45 grammar lessons, vocabulary and verb software games, as well as a members only forum. There is also a 60 day guarantee in addition to a free sample course that you can download. The full course is available as a download or as a 20 CD pack.

Champs-Elysées

Champs-Elysées is an audio magazine for intermediate to advanced French learners. It is a subscription program that includes the magazine, an hour-long CD or cassette, plus an optional study supplement (Champs-Elysées Plus) . It is designed to improve your vocabulary, grammar and listening comprehension, as well as your cultural understanding of the French-speaking world. Each magazine includes about a dozen topics ranging from politics and economics to tourism and geography to literature, poetry, music, film, etc.

Recordings of mp3s were done by a native speaker of French from Haute-Savoie. Feel free to download them for your own personal use or in other non-commercial educational settings. I encourage French teachers to use them in classes too! If you use Mozilla Firefox, I highly recommend the DownThemAll add-on to make downloading much faster and easier.

For the vocabulary lists, I am making audio flashcards [French to English and English to French] with a flash mp3 player in each "card" so you can listen to the pronunciation of the words as you study. The flashcards will open in a new window and you simply click => to go on to the next set of flashcards or to continue on to the exercises.

The exercises can be matching, multiple choice or fill in the blank and they will also open in a new window.

I am slowly changing over the pronunciation guides to standard International Phonetic Alphabet symbols, though only French I is finished so far and Internet Explorer has some spacing issues with the symbols. I recommend using Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome to view this site.

There are many more countries and regions around the world that speak French instead of just France, Quebec, Belgium and Switzerland, but those are the only dialects that appear on this site for now so that is why only those four flags are shown at the top of the page.

Book Recommendations. Language textbooks are rather expensive and generally only include the formal, written language. You will need more exposure to the real spoken language if you want to be become fluent. In addition to the Champs Elysees audio program, as well as a good dictionary, grammar review, and book of verb conjugations, I have used the following books and materials for learning French:
