Cat in Couette

For the second year, we’ve had a technician come to verify that the chauffage au sol is actually working, and sure enough, they tell us everything is fine. Then why is it only 14 C / 57 F when we get up in the morning?? I seriously think the (main) reason why I don’t like living in France is the lack of heat indoors. There is a maximum temperature for the chauffage au sol so if your apartment is too hot, you have a legal right to complain and get it fixed. But if your apartment is freezing cold, too bad for you. There is no minimum temperature.

This was the lovely radiator that could heat our entire apartment in 5 minutes, before it decided to stop working. Canaille really liked it even though he has 4 pounds of fur to keep him warm.

But I guess that’s not enough, because he crawls into the couette to keep warm.

But sometimes he and his fat belly don’t seem to mind the cold.

(This is what happens when I’m stuck home all day because of the snow.)

Silly questions for you (since you’re my source for these matters). Do you know if I (American) can travel from Nice to Ireland using only my Carte de Sejour as ID. The trip just came up and I won’t have my new passport in time for the trip. Airline says I need a ‘national residence card’. Is that what my Carte de Sejour is? Somehow I don’t think so.

So incredibly cute!! I miss having a cat so much but having given away a cat to come to france I don’t think I could do it again when I don’t know how long I’ll be here for. NZ-France is a little too far I think to transport the cat. Cuddle the cat to keep warm, such good hot water bottles!

Why can’t you put the heat higher if you find it’s too cold? I’m a bit confused.

@David: Because our radiators don’t work, and the mayor decides when to turn on the chauffage au sol and at what temperature. We have no control over the temperature so we can’t turn it up. :( And we still have to pay for the chauffage au sol even though it doesn’t heat anything and that’s what makes me so angry, especially since I’m paying so much more in electricity because of the little space heater that I bought. I’m really sick of this apartment!!

Just think, if you were wasting energy you would not have taken such beautiful white on white photos. You will have wonderful winter memories at least. I am also freezing here in Isère.

Jennie, we have two large radiators in the living room helping to heat the house. We have control over our heat, but DH doesn’t like to waste fuel, so we waste electricity instead.
    Darling Canaille! I want one!

I’m not that crazy about cats (allergies and I’m a definite dog person), but Canaille is the cutest thing. I just want to squeeze him!
My roommates keep the heat turned up WAY too high, and we just got an GDF bill for 1200 for the past three months. It’s insane!

Why is Jennie no longer in France?

I created this blog in September 2006 when I moved to France from Michigan to teach English. Many of the earlier posts are about my personal life in France, dealing with culture shock, traveling in Europe and becoming fluent in French. In July 2011, I relocated to Australia to start my PhD in Applied Linguistics. Although I am no longer living in France, my research is on foreign language pedagogy and I teach French at a university so these themes appear most often on the blog. I also continue to post about traveling and being an American abroad.
