All in a Day’s Work

Instead of going to the Fête du Lac yesterday in Annecy where I knew there would be thousands of people, I decided to stay home and work on my IE Languages website. I spent all day redesigning the layout (for about the 17th time since I created the site), and I think I’m happy with the way it turned out. There’s now a collapsible menu on the left side of every page to help with navigation.  I’ve also added a Contribute page if anyone wants to help me out with adding more content.  I’m most interested in adding audio files and IPA transcriptions to help with pronunciation. And if anyone knows of a way to generate the HTML codes (decimal numbers) for IPA symbols just by using the keyboard (such as the Unicode Phonetic Keyboard), please tell me. Typing the numbers or copying and pasting each individual symbol takes such a long time!

And if you have no idea what IPA means, shame on you and go here or here. It is seriously the best invention in the world.

You might want to check how your site looks in other browsers and screen resolutions because the layout is way off centre in Firefox which is creating a scroll bar along the bottom of the screen.

You might also want to change your Meta description tag to something more descriptive as this is what people will see when you site comes up in Google et al.

I sent an email to my dad to ask him. You might get a kick out of this since you actually know what Unicode is, but he’s the guy who started it ;-)

Ok I heard back from my dad and he said:

“It looks like that keyboard will work (*if* she works on Windows). If not, let me know which platform, and I’ll ask around. When I use it, I just copy from http://www.phon.ucl.ac.uk/home/wells/ipa-unicode.htm

I looked over her French vs Italian stuff; pretty nice. I’ve used books in the series http://www.amazon.fr/LItalien-à-Z-édition-2003/dp/2218736594/, but the downside is that those are organized alphabetically, instead of systematically.”

    Hope that helps some ;-)

Your language website is fantastic! Congratulations and thank you so much! I haven’t had much time to have a look around but I will.. I’m very interested in reading the advice you have to offer about learning another language and French language recommendations/tips. Once again, thanks!

Your website is truly amazing! I am currently a student and hope to be an assistant sometime after I graduate. Thank you so much for taking the time to make it. I already find it incredibly useful :)

I’m also a big fan of IPA… and I teach it to my voice students from their first lesson when dealing with vowel sounds (if old enough to understand what I’m talking about).

Why is Jennie no longer in France?

I created this blog in September 2006 when I moved to France from Michigan to teach English. Many of the earlier posts are about my personal life in France, dealing with culture shock, traveling in Europe and becoming fluent in French. In July 2011, I relocated to Australia to start my PhD in Applied Linguistics. Although I am no longer living in France, my research is on foreign language pedagogy and I teach French at a university so these themes appear most often on the blog. I also continue to post about traveling and being an American abroad.
